One of the things that has consistently drawn me back to playing Eve is the complexity and "realness" of the economy in Eve. For whatever reason, I've always enjoyed playing certain business simulation games, and Eve offers one of the best business simulations possible. They don't call it "spreadsheets in space" for nothing.
On the subjects of real economies, i wanted to share this essay that I ran into that I found very interesting. I never realized how complicated something as seemingly simple as a pencil actually is from an economic standpoint. There are materials that need to be mined or grown in far off places of the globe, from cultures that don't speak the same language. These then consolidate to factories where the raw materials manufacture the finished product, which is then distributed to the higher population centers for sale. Beyond just marveling at the counter-intuitive complexity involved in making a single pencil, I think it's fun to reflect on just how much Eve reflects similar actions at work.
